Plays from 9/8/08 meeting
September 8th, 2008
As with all clips from our association, please pay attention to the play and the officials’ positioning and NOT to WHO the officials are. These plays are not intended to embarrass or ridicule anyone. Those officials on the plays aren’t the only ones making these mistakes. They are to be used for training purposes. Our association can only get better through self reflection and review of film.
The following plays were presented during the 9/8/08 meeting for instructional use.
- Play #1
- Slow Motion
- Watch the offensive linemen initial block. Umpire needs to key on this and read RUN
- Play #2
- Slow Motion
- Watch the offensive linemen initial block. Umpire needs to key on this and read PASS.
- Once the umpire reads pass, they MUST move to the line of scrimmage to help with ineligible players down field
- Play #3
- LJ needs to have their heels on the sideline
- Play #4
- Freeze Frame
- Neither the LJ nor the HL get to the goal line at the snap
- As wing officials, we need to SPRINT to the goal line at the snap
- Play #5
- Freeze Frame
- the LJ is not on the sideline. 4th down and 1 with a run up the middle
- HL needs to recognize that it is a close spot for a crucial down and sprint in with a spot
- Play #6
- Reverse Angle
- Freeze Frame 1
- Freeze Frame 2
- HL needs to recognize the play is to their side and get to the goal line
- Because it is a sweep play, get to the goal line and back out towards the track so you have a good look at the goal line
- How can we rule a TD on a close TD play when we are standing at the 10 yard line?
- Play #7
- Good job by the crew on this play
- The helmet is ripped off the runner and the play is immediately ruled dead. The penalty is then assessed 15 yards from where the helmet was removed and not where the player was tackled on the ground
- Play #8
- Freeze Frame
- Fumble by the full back.
- Don’t get too close to the play before it ends
- The LJ needs to recognize that the Referee has thrown their bean bag, signaling a fumble, and stay away from the play
- Play #9
- Slow Motion
- Different Angle
- Different Angle Slow Motion
- Offensive pass interference was called on #12 by the HL.
- This is not offensive pass interference. The wide receiver is attempting to run a route and the defensive #51 steps into #12’s path. If anything, this would be holding or illegal contact on #51 defense.
- Instead of 1st and 10 at their 36, we have now 2nd and 17 from their 7
- Play #10
- Slow Motion
- Different Angle
- Different Angle Slow Motion
- Initial Punt Position Picture
- Fake Punt Pass reception
- Several things to look at on this fake punt play.
- 1st, notice that the original line of scrimmage is the 22 yard line
- 2nd, notice that the pass is caught at the 26
- 3rd, notice that several ineligible receivers were past the line of scrimmage at the time of the pass
- 4th, we have a questionable hold or illegal block in the back on the offensive team
- The only flag we should have had on the play is the illegal man downfield. The crew must read that all interior players on the line of scrimmage are ineligible and if there is a fake, the pass must be behind the line of scrimmage to be legal
- Play #11
- Slow Motion
- Slow Motion Zoom
- Different Angle
- Different Angel Slow Motion
- Assisting the runner is called on the full back by the Referee.
- This is a call that must be so obvious that everyone in the stands can see it. Plus, on all replays, the QB had his own momentum that was not aided by the full back. The full back might have placed his hands on the QB, but that did not help him get a first down.
- Plus, the different angle video shows the angle that the referee has. There is no way to tell from that angle whether the full back actually pushed the QB.
- The wingmen hae the best view of this play
- We took away a first down in opposition territory which forced the offensive team to punt.
- Play #12
- Slow Motion
- Different Angle
- This play shows the philosophy (or lack thereof) of trusting your partner
- An illegal block in the back is called on Red #27. There are 2 officials staring right at the block and both rule it legal. The flag is thrown from 20+ yards behind the play by another official
- This block is a borderline call that we must TRUST OUR PARTNERS. Both officials evaluated the play and ruled it legal.
- Play #13
- Freeze Frame 1
- Freeze Frame 2
- Different Angle
- Different Angle Slow Motion
- This play is the game changer of all game changers.
- It is 4th and 2 at the B22 yard line (as viewed from the first freeze frame)
- The running back fumbles the ball at the B19.
- The HL blows his whistle while the ball is loose.
- Immediately after the whistle, B recovers the ball
- The crew ends up replaying the down.
- Notice in the 2nd freeze frame that it is now 4th and 1 at the B21. THE DOWN BOX MOVED!
- Not only did we make a mistake by having an inadvertant whistle, we also gave incorrect information to the offensive team.
- 2008 rule change clarifies in 4-2-3b that if we have an inadvertant whistle after a fumble, the offensive team has the option to replay the down or take the result of the play where they lost possession of the ball.
- In this case, we should have given A a first down at the B19.
- If you watch the different angle replays, you will alose see illegal helmet contact on White #5
- By the way, team A ends up getting a first down after the replay, and then on the following play, they score a TD. Team A wins by 1 point
- BE PATIENT WITH YOUR WHISTLES!!!!!!!!!!!!
